RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesian shuttler Jonatan Christie booked his place in the final of the BWF World Tour Super 750 India Open 2026 after overcoming Singapore’s Loh Kean Yew in straight games, 21-18, 22-20, at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium on Saturday, January 17, 2026.
Despite facing heavy pressure, particularly in the opening game, Jonatan managed to stay composed and adapt his strategy mid-match, a factor he credited as decisive in securing victory.
“Praise God I could reach the final, it’s really beyond my expectations,” Jonatan said in a statement released by the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI), as quoted by
Antara. He acknowledged that Loh’s aggressive play disrupted his initial game plan, forcing him to make quick adjustments on court. “Today Loh played very well, truly exceptional,” he added.
In the first game, Jonatan fell behind significantly as he struggled with both the opponent’s intensity and the tricky court conditions. Wind factors posed an additional challenge, even though they initially seemed favorable.
“The conditions were actually advantageous, playing against the wind, but Loh was so aggressive that I got confused at times,” he explained.
A brief discussion with his coaching team during the interval helped Jonatan regain rhythm. Gradually, he improved his returns and shifted the momentum, turning the match in his favor.
The second game presented another test, with wind conditions now working against singles players. Jonatan responded by playing more patiently and creatively.
“In the second game, the conditions were less favorable for singles, playing with the wind. I had to think harder and find ways to get through that moment,” he said.
His explosive celebration at the end reflected relief. “It was such a release to finish the match. If it had gone to a third game, the story might have been different,” Jonatan admitted.
Beyond the technical battle, Jonatan expressed gratitude for the support of Indonesian fans in the stands, including representatives from the Indonesian Embassy in New Delhi.
“Thank you to the Indonesian friends who came to the stadium to support me, and also to the Embassy staff for their encouragement and prayers,” he said.
Jonatan will contest the final on Sunday, January 18, against the winner of the semifinal between Canada’s Victor Lai and Taiwan’s Lin Chun Yi. ***
